2018 HNIB Midwest Tryout Festival

When: May 11th – May 13th, 2018

For: Boys entering FR, SO, JR, SR, or PG year (Fall of ’18)
Cost: $165 for the Tryout Festival (additional fee to participate in HNIB Sophomore Tournament and/or Boys Major Showcase later in July)

What is the HNIB Midwest Tryout Festival?

Hockey Night in Boston will hold its annual Midwest Tryout Festival from May 11 – May 13 at Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, OH. Players will participate in this Festival to compete against talented players from the Midwest region. They will also have to opportunity to move on to either the HNIB Sophomore All-Star Tournament, or the HNIB Boys Major Showcase held this summer at the double-rink Haverhill Valley Forum in Haverhill, MA. The HNIB Major Showcase is the granddaddy of all Summer tournaments, with the Boys Major Showcase in its 44th year and the Sophomore All-Star Tournament in its 38th year!

Our HNIB Midwest representative is John Malloy of Gilmour Academy. Coach Malloy will start his 13th season as the Varsity A Hockey coach. He is also the Gilmour Academy Hockey Director and from 1998 – 2004 he coached the Gilmour Academy Men’s Prep Team. Prior to this, he coached for sixteen years at Cleveland Heights High School, and for two years at Rocky River High School. Coach Malloy played collegiate hockey at Miami University of Ohio.

The Gilmour Academy Ice Arena entrance is off of S.O.M. Center Road (91). We are north of Cedar Road and south of the traffic circle where Gates Mills intersects.

The Gilmour Academy Ice Arena facility draws over 300,000 visitors yearly. We are the home to hundreds of hockey and figure skating events throughout the year. The annual CSHL youth hockey playoffs, Peewee, Bantam, Midget Tier 2 State play-offs, and the CSHL All Star Tournament will result in thousands of additional visitors to our beautiful facility from all around the country.

Major Showcase Tryout Format:

The Midwest Tryout Festival will pick players who are entering their Junior, Senior, or PG year in the Fall of 2018 for the HNIB Boys Major Showcase. The tryout for the HNIB Major Showcase will be held Friday, May 11 – Saturday, May 12.

  • Tryout will consist of a practice, three games, and a college hockey seminar.
  • Spaces will be limited to 6 teams of 18, with 2 goalies per team.
  • Friday Evening: Practice, followed by a game
  • Saturday Morning: Two games, followed by a College Hockey Seminar @2:00pm

Sophomore Tournament Tryout Format:

The Midwest Tryout Festival will pick players who are entering their Freshman or Sophomore year in the Fall of 2018 to move onto the HNIB Sophomore All-Star Tournament. The tryout for the HNIB Sophomore Tournament will be held Saturday, May 12th – Sunday, May 13th.

  • Tryout will consist of a practice, three games, and a college hockey seminar.
  • Spaces will be limited to 6 teams of 18, with 2 goalies per team.
  • Saturday Afternoon: College Hockey Seminar @2:00pm
  • Saturday Evening: Practice, followed by a game
  • Sunday Morning: Two games

Tryout Festival Cost & Refund Policy

Cost is as follows:

  • $165 for Tryout Festival (three games, college hockey seminar & includes jersey)
  • If registering online, you have the option to pay with a Credit/Debit card, or by check
  • If you choose to pay with a Credit/Debit card, you must pay the full amount ($165)
  • If you choose to pay by check, you must submit a $165  check or money order as soon as possible to complete registration

Refund / Cancellation Policy:

  • There are no refunds 45 days or less from the Tryout Festival.
  • If a player is not accepted into the Tryout Festival because of lack of spots, their fee will be refunded in full.
  • Refund requests must be made via email to midwesthnib@gmail.com

Major Showcase & Sophomore Tournament Cost

Cost for the Sophomore All-Star Tournament in Boston is as follows:

  • $395 for the tournament (includes jersey)
  • If registering online, you have the option to pay with a Credit/Debit card, or by check

HNIB Midwest Hotel Information: Guests can now make reservations utilizing the following methods below for the HNIB MIDWEST TRYOUTS:

  1. Call 1-800-317-1960 give them the group code HNI group name and date.
  2. Go to www.embassybeachwood.com, enter dates and number of guests, click the “enter special code section”, enter HNI  for your group code and continue to make reservations.

Room types are based on first come first serve basis.  The cut-off date is Friday, April 27, 2018 to get group rate.
